Ontex Confirms Hypermarcas Deal

Belgian diaper maker Ontex has confirmed that it is engaged in discussions to acquire Brazilian company Hypermarcas S.A. for $300 million. These discussions are at an advanced stage, but neither party is legally bound to proceed with the transaction, according to the company. There can be no assurance that a transaction will ultimately materialize.

Ontex is a leading producer of personal hygiene products, ranging from baby diapers to products for feminine hygiene and adult incontinence. In July, Brazilian media first reported rumors of a possible Ontex/Hypermarcas deal. Hypermarcas, with diaper brands including Sapeka, Pom Pom and Hydrogen, has sales of about $415 million per year.

Ontex has already proven its commitment to growing sales in the America. In March, the company acquired Mexican diaper producer Mabesa and created the Ontex Americas retail division, which reporteldy comprises about 38% of the group's sales.
