Among the Nordic paper giants, except for UPM, which is still on strike, the other giants are showing more ambitious development plans. Stora Enso may convert the idle paper making machine of the Oulu paper mill into folding board.
Stora Enso is starting a feasibility study to convert idle paper machines at its Oulu plant in Finland into a high-capacity board production line. Following the successful completion of the feasibility study, an investment decision could be made by the end of 2022, with a start-up in 2025. Stora Enso's potential investment in Oulu will target high-quality and low-carbon footprint packaging for frozen and refrigerated food and beverages, as well as non-food applications such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The feasibility study will also assess how the conversion can help Stora Enso achieve its science-based CO2 emissions targets.
